I feel like this is the safest place to squee where I won't offend anyone. Yay for lj!

Of course I'm happy about Obama being re-elected, but I was expecting that. Romney was always the Republicans version of John Kerry, and this is pretty much 2004 for them. But there are so many extras that I wasn't expecting! Gay marriage passing in four states! All of the rape-apologist Republicans were defeated across the board! More woman were elected to the House and Senate than ever before! Demographics have officially changed forever! Marijuana has been legalized in two states! Social values have defeated the interests of millionaires! I feel like I woke up to a shiny new America, and I like it!

So I finally broke down & got the journaller app so I wouldn't have to deal with those pop up ads on Safari, but my friends page won't update no matter how many times I refresh it! Does anyone else have this problem, or is my phone special? I want my $2.99 back!

Last night Shawn and I went with a bunch of fantastic people who we never get to see often enough to dinner at the Green Zebra, a schmancy vegetarian restaurant (or as one friend put it, "vegetable cuisine"). We had our own private room and ordered a bunch of different courses from the menu. I got:

Garlic soup with truffle oil. So good! Possibly my favorite of the evening. The taste was very mellow and not too garlicky at all.

Shared cheese plate. Really can you ever go wrong with cheese? The blue cheese especially was a hit, because it wasn't too sharp the way it sometimes can be.

Potato gnocchi. This one was disappointing. At first I thought they brought me the wrong dish because it was a bowlful of tiny round potatoes. I wondered where my gnocchi was. It was very good, but it soon began to dawn on me that this was the gnocchi dish. I wondered, was I wrong? I know that gnocchi is basically made from potatoes. But no, I wasn't wrong at all! Gnocchi is pasta, dammit! Do not serve a bowl of tater tots to an Italian and call it gnocchi! Shawn got a spicy sweet potato filled pastry that I wish I'd gotten instead.

Mushroom popover. This was yummy Italian bread filled with tiny mushrooms and a dab of the fantastic blue cheese from before. This one was good. The blue cheese was a perfect complement to the mushrooms.

Coconut rice pudding topped with lime ice cream. Okay, it sounds a little odd, but I decided to get it because I knew Shawn would want the other dessert option, which was a warm chocolate pudding in a pastry shell. I was very happy with my coconut/lime confection and ate it all up. I usually can't have more than a few bites of rich chocolate, so I made the right choice.

And now I'm making myself hungry all over again. That's the only bad thing about schmancy restaurants...tiny little portions means no boxed up leftovers the next day.

It is freezing outside! So I'm feeling very lucky that Shawn and I are both off today and have decided that we are not going to set foot outdoors. The bad thing is that our pipes have burst again, but the handyman is coming in a little bit. What's bizarre is that last night when they burst (again!) our water pressure went very low, but today the pressure is fine, and nothing appears to be leaking. However, when Shawn tried starting the washing machine he could hear ice crackling. So our theory is that the pipes froze over to the point where it sealed up the leaks. Not bad as a temporary fix, but glad someone is coming.

We went to Best Buy yesterday and bought a new camera. We went with the kodak easyshare. It's cute and small and red, and it's crazy user-friendly for a novice like me, so I think I'll be able to take much better pictures with it.

Think I'm going to make a batch of potato white bean soup for right now. We're going to make tilapia with roasted kale later on, but soup will be good for lunch. I played with the wii fit earlier (so much fun!), so I got my exercise for the day. The rest will be about eating and finding a new project to knit.

There are 239 movies on this list. SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 movies, you have no life. Copy & paste this list, then, put x's next to the movies you've seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun!

Every now and then I look at dogs on petfinder. I really want to get a corgi someday, because they have great personalities and I think it's the perfect size for the cats...not so small that Puck will beat it up, but not so big that it will beat up the cats.

I found this little girl here:

She's three years old, very mellow and sweet (exactly the personality I want in a dog). I want to adopt her RIGHT NOW! But we're so not in the position to get a dog. We do have a yard, but I wouldn't want to upset the cats. I'd rather wait till we buy a place that's a little bigger so if they decide they don't like the company of canines, they can have their own space to get away from it.

But *sigh*! She looks like such a little sweetheart!

Ohmigod, that was the best piece of cheese I've seen in a long time! Shawn saw it with me, and it was fun because we kept giggling and laughing out loud and the serious parts and whispering to each other. Luckily the theater wasn't too packed. But it was so fantastic!
don't click unless you've seen the movie, or if you haven't but don't care )

All in all, a fabulous night at the movies, as long as you're secluded enough not to bug people with your incessant giggling. $8 well spent!

Today is my short day (8-2) and the books looked pretty dead, so I called in sick. Think I can accomplish more by cleaning the apt and doing laundry than sitting around the spa.

And now, a meme!

Shawn had to go to jury duty selection (we're hoping his crazy looking steampunk beard keeps him from getting picked) and texted me about Blago. He says its an interesting day to be in a courtroom. Don't think anyone is going to be sad to see the man go.

The rest of the trip was relaxing and lovely. Light shopping (yarn store! squee!), hanging out with our good friends Colin and Marcie, and their baby Liam, and taking long walks outside. It gets chilly when the sun goes down, but never more than just "chilly." At one point I passed a women dressed in Uggs, cargo pants, and sweater and a hat and overheard her say, "I should have worn long johns! Its freezing!" I couldn't help laughing out loud. Sweetie, you don't know what freezing is!

Baby Liam is definitely the most chill baby I've ever encountered. We wheeled him around all day in his stroller and he didn't make a peep. Totally a laid back California baby. Wet diaper? Hungry? Cold? Meh, whatevs. Eventually they want to move back to the midwest, and we were joking that someday Liam will discover he used to live in California, and will be very upset. "Seriously? We lived in San Diego, and you moved us back to IL? I could have learned to surf? What the hell were you two thinking?!"

And now we're back home in the cold and snow. Sigh. Still happy though. Vacations are fun, but eventually you need your own bed and your own kitties.

Going to attempt a brief summary of my San Diego Thanksgiving:

-My MIL's cats, Andre and Rosie, are getting bigger and fitting into their personalities. Andre is still the big laid back moose, who likes to play and is fine with you picking him up. Rosie was much more adventurous this time, and didn't hide, but she only likes MIL to pet her, and gave little protest squeaks if I came too close.

-Both BIL's (A and J) were in attendance. All three of them could be found on their laptops at any given moment.

-The weather was gorgeous by our standards, but not by the natives. It was misty the first day and we giggled because every news channel kept reporting "STORMWATCH 2008!" It's seriously like spritzing a cat with water and the cat freaking the hell out.

-It did rain hard on Thanksgiving morning. For about ten minutes. Then the sun came out again. Granted, it does get dangerous when it rains because there are no gutters and the roads get very slick and oily (nothing a Midwestener used to icy roads can't handle), but we still imagined San Diegoans complaining, "Thanksgiving is ruined!" Years from now, they will remember the horrible Thanksgiving when it rained and no one came to dinner because they were scared to leave the house.

-Watched the Macy's Day Parade. The float for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends had Rick Astley! The Brothers Feakins immediately educated their mom about Rick rolling.

-Then watched the Westminster Dog Show. Awww...puppies!

-Took a walk in the sunny weather. Didn't miss snow at all.

-Had dinner at about 4. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, green beans, stuffing...mmm...carbilicious. Napped for two hours afterwards, then watched TV with A and J. Sweet, sweet cable.

Motivation to post...waning. Will post more about the trip tomorrow.

oh noes!

You Are 49% Likely to Survive Another Great Depression

Your habits are pretty on par with the average person.

Unfortunately, this means your chances aren't good in another Great Depression.

Start saving your money now. Living in debt isn't doing you any favors.

Also figure out how to live a little more cheaply. Every little bit you can trim will help.

Oh come on. Just cuz I don't garden and don't own a gun? Though I should probably stock up on the canned goods...

Other than that, I had a lovely Thanksgiving vacation. Will post more about it tomorrow. Right now my brain is soggy from working a long day.

So incredibly happy! Today is the opposite of how I felt four years ago when Kerry lost. So excited to witness history in the making. We didn't go to Grant Park, but we stayed at home and ordered pizza, drank wine, and flipped from channel to channel and tabbed back and forth between all the different blogs. We stayed tuned in as long as we could because we wanted to see the outcome of Indiana. The fact that it took so fucking long was a good sign. And it's blue! Eeee! I have family in Indiana and I'm so happy for them. My cousin in the Peace Corps gets to come home to a blue state!

Despite all the jubilation, I'm devestated that Prop 8 passed. I don't even get how that was did California vote in Obama but block gay marriage? So that's still an uphill battle, but with a new administration, perhaps the hill won't be so steep.

*sigh* Last day of UndeadJournal. How I'll miss it!

I think I finally have my costume sorted out. I'm trying to be Kenley from Project Runway. I'm going to get my hair straighted out at work tonight (I hope my girl isn't too booked!), then my usual retro makeup, and this awesome feather headband I found at Urban Outfitters.

I'm specifically trying to mimic this dress:

She never actually wore it, just made it, but otherwise I would just look like myself for Halloween (Kenley was all about the retro-wear). I bought two black-and-purple plaid shirts from H&M, cut off the sleeves, had a much more sewing-savvy friend help me pin them together so the sleeves would puff, then hand-stitched them. Project Runway, indeed! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Last week I bought a floral skirt at a resale shop...unfortunately not the bright pastel bubble skirt in the picture, it's a black skirt with a pink cherry blossom print, but it's the closest I could find to a "Kenley-print". It's not easy finding florals in October! It will still clash marvellously with the shirt. Then yesterday I found a cheap black velvet corset top to put over the shirt and bought two crinoline skirts to layer under the floral skirt.

And of course the last bit of the costume is the bratty attitude to go with it. I plan on doing lots of, "Tim Gunn doesn't get my style!" and "I wasn't going for elegant, Heidi."

Will post pictures tomorrow and will also go into more detail on my craft blog, [ profile] jescatling.

Yo! Gah!

I went to yoga yesterday. I haven't done that in such a long time. I kept making all sorts of excuses, like, "I'm too hungover today," "I'm getting brunch with a friend instead," "I should stay in and clean the apt". It was actually a rough session for me. I had made sure to eat enough breakfast so that I wouldn't get lightheaded, but I hadn't drank enough water so I got lightheaded anyway. Ran out of the room during Warrior pose when I started seeing spots, and gulped down some water in the front area. Was mostly fine after that. Over the summer I was pretty good about bringing my water bottle filled with Emergen-C, must remember to do that again. Electrolytes, important! Also, my sinuses are unhappy so every time I did Downward Dog (dirty!) I gave myself a headache. Not to mention my new yoga mat still smells like plastic. Not good when you're trying to take a deep, cleansing breath and all you can think is, "Agh! Toxic!"

Still felt nice and loose when I got home and I cleared my sinuses with my neti pot. I just did a quick practice this morning while my coffee was brewing. I will definitely be back next week...I want to make sure I'm in the habit of going every Wednesday so that I still make myself in the winter when all I really want to do is stay inside and huddle under blankets.
